I want to learn how to snowboard and want some advice?
Hi, I want to learn how to snowboard. I dont really know that much about but it has been something i have always wanted to do and i was think i should probably learn soon if i ever want to (im in grade 10). What are the best brands of snowboards and boots and all that stuff and how would you recommend going about trying this new sport out? thanks, as much advice as possible!
I would either do a season rental for the first year so that you can learn what you like and what you don’t.
When you are ready to buy, look for a pre-season or a post-season sale. It is common for snowboarding equiment to be marked down more than 50% when buying previous season gear. Do you have a Sports Authority near you? They have gread deals at their pre-season Sniagrab sale.
I knew that I would like it so I took the plunge and got entry level gear from the start and took lessons. There are many brands that have intermediate models that you can learn on and "grow" into – Ride Control and Ride EX bindings are what I would suggest but K2, Burton, Rossi, etc. all make nice intro boards. I would spend the extra few dollars and stay away from the Morrow and other low end boards.
Look for a board that has a nice flex and pop – and isn’t too stiff. You will be able to ride it for years and by the time you are heavier for a bigger board you will be ready for an intermediate model.
Good Luck
5 commentsHow many days does it take to learn how to snowboard?
Hi, I’m going on the mountain for 2 days. I usually ski, but I decided to pick up snowboarding. I already read up beginner guides online, heelside/toeside and stuff. I will take at least one lesson and then practice. Will I be able to learn how to snowboard well in 2 days?
Thanks!
well if you have been skiing for a long time snowboarding will be harder to learn. with skis you were used to the independent movement of both your feet, now with snowboards when you go to move one of your feet, you will move your whole body and most likely you will fall, i went thru the same thing … i was a skiier my whole life then decided to pick up snowboarding… i think you can pull it off in a couple days i did its harder to learn but easier to get better at… just take it slow, dont push yourself and once you get the feel of it you will be enjoying it probably even more than skiing … hope this helped and good luck!!
Where can I learn how to snowboard?
I’ve been very excited because my mom says she’ll buy me a snowboard, but I just realized that there’s not really any place around here to snowboard.
There’s no mountains near here, and I don’t know about any huge hills. I live in Michigan, though, and it does snow here every winter. So, is it possible to learn some other way besides going to a mountain and learning there?
Well, for one a ps3′s too expensive, and also I really don’t like video games that much. And I’ve wanted a snowboard for ever.
I would if I could, but the thing is is that my dad won’t take me to a mountain. Trust me. He won’t even go 15 miles away to drop me off at a friend’s house. If I ever was able to go to a mountain to snowboard, then it’d probably be when I’m 18 and have my own car, and I don’t want to wait that long to snowboard.
It would be easier to help you if I knew where in Michigan you are but I’ll show you some places but here are all the resorts: http://travel.yahoo.com/p-ski-525421-michigan_ski_resorts-i
The have links to the individual sites as well. I want to make you aware that it’s kind of foolish to get a snowboard if you aren’t going to learn how to ride it, Maybe, instead of getting a board, rent a board for the season and ask for a season pass instead. A lot of resorts have buses up there, and I’m sure your dad would let you ride the bus. If your heart is set on getting that board, ask for your mom’s help with transportation if you pay for the pass or something like that. I learned on a rented board and I’m incredibly glad that I did because I tore it up pretty bad just from learning and if it had been mine, I would have had to get a new one the next year anyway. Try out snowboarding before you buy a board because you might hate it, though I doubt it. Or maybe, get a used board boot and bindings and ask for a season pass somewhere too. There are resorts all over Michigan and I’m sure you’ll find one and you need to work out a deal with your dad involving transportation if you want to go.

Tips for skaters who want to learn how to snowboard
well i have been skating for around 6 years and i am very seriously good,by the way i wouldnt lie becuase i do not like liers and it would be no meaning to ask this if i was lying.anyway, ive been snowboarding once down a long hill but was a little shallow it was my first time and i got the hang of it really well, better than my friends.is it hard to learn to snowboard with a background of skating.any tips or things i need to know first?
Some of my best students ever were skateboarders before they tried snowboarding – I think that the balance and the skill of keeping the board under you is a big help in learning to ride.
These are some beginner tips that I have been writing:
You will probably be renting, so let the staff fit the boots and board correctly for you – and take a group lesson for a couple times and practice what you learn in the afternoon. Here are the basics of learning the way that I was taught to teach:
To determine your stance, slide on a hard floor in your socks, which foot is in front? Left foot in front – Regular stance, Right foot in front – Goofy stance. The rental place will ask you this.
Day 1 lesson usually includes:
Learn how to fall. Forward on to your forearms – never your hands as you can break yours wrists. Backward onto one side of your butt and try to roll – never your hands or the center of your butt as you can break your tail bone.
Consider wearing wrist guards and a helmet
Turning – think about turning as additional pressure on the front toe or heel. Turning a snowboard is all about edge control. When you have the board across the hill and stand up on the heel edge, you can tilt your feet forward to slide down the hill, tilt back to get more edge bite and stop – the basic side slip.
To turn, you bite the edge into the snow and then put pressure on the downhill egde of your front foot. This will release the edge in the front only and the nose of the board will start to swing down the hill. This will also put your weight forward which is correct. Then, put equal pressure back on the uphill edge with both feet and you will turn back across the hill and stop. Practice this a lot until you can get the board almost straight down the hill before returning to a stop.
Day 2 lesson:
A complete turn is just a continuation of this exercise. Use more pressure on the downhill side of the front foot to release the front of the edge and the board will swing faster toward the fall line. You MUST wait for the board to cross the fall line (straight down the hill) before you transition your weight to the other edge (or you will catch the downhill edge – ouch). Then use equal pressure on both feet on the new uphill edge to get the board to move back across the hill – this is a complete turn.
Once you are doing these in both directions, you can start linking the turns.
Good Luck

Is learning how to snowboard hard?
What do I all need? Is is worth doing it just for fun if it costs alot?
No, Its not hard to learn,
Youl’ll just fall over heaps, i suggest wrist guards for the first couple of times as the wrists always hit the snow first and it hurts real bad after a while.
Snowboarding is great fun. Do it! Enjoy!
