What is the difference between sliding and carving in snowboarding?

I need to know what I am doing currently. If someone is sliding, how do they progress to carving? By going faster?

sliding is going down the hill on your edge and your pushing snow with your board. Carving is digging your edge into the snow and making a cut. I’ve always said that the key to learning how to carve is to practice your edge control by sliding on your heel and toe edge equally. Once you’ve progressed try to link your heel and toe edges. eventually it should come together and you’ll start carving. also ask other riders for tips on the slopes most are willing to help. balance is also key to staying on your edge.

What am I doing wrong on my snowboard?

I can ride the front edge just fine, but when I carve around to the back edge, the tail of the board pushes out in front and I wind up going backwards (tail first). I can then ride it tail first on the back edge just fine, but if I try to ride the back edge the right way, I can’t keep it straight.

Well as a snowboard instructor i would need to watch your Forum to se what is really wrong. But maybe in most cases you are trying to get back onto your heel edge to fast so you loose con-troll of that edge and you spin right back around. Try making more gradual turns off your toe edge and then get the feel of it. Then you can try Sharp maneuvers of your toe edge.

How to snowboard good?

Ok i know how to snowboard like ride down hills and stuff and can occasionaly hit jumps. But i got no style. I dont know how to carve. How do you carve? and how do u do spins off jumps

well to learn how to carve it really helps to get a few lessons from the people at your local mountain. As for spins off a jumps. If your doing a 180 it helps to ride switch off the jump so that when you do your half turn you land the way you ride. If your going for 360 when your learning it helps to turn at the top so that u get momentum and you have less to spin. Hope this helps

What size snowboard should I buy?

I’m a beginner, just started last year and I went on my first black (no falling, yay!) last weekend. No, I can’t carve or do tricks.

I’m female, 5ft. 3 1/2 in. or 161.29 centimeters, weigh 110 pounds or 50 kilograms. I wear a shoe size 7 1/2 and sometimes 8.

Yes, I know that the board should got up to between my nose and chin, but I’m looking to order a board online and that won’t help very much, will it? I thought that 148cm was a good size, but I was told to get a smaller one. Also, the snowboard sizing guide at http://www.frostyrider.com/tips/size-guide.htm told me to get a 140cm, but isn’t that a little short?

Any and all help is appreciated, thanks!
I don’t want to do any tricks, I jsut want a good, basic snowboard that’ll easily get me down the mountain and help me get better(faster, carving, etc.). No jumps, no rails.

well first off what kind of board are you looking for

freeride or freestyle

are you wanting to get into tricks do you like the look of the park and you think thats where you will ride the most then

you want a slightly shorter board ad say 140 is good

or doo you like riding the whole mountain and speed and riiding all the different kind of terain is your thing

then you want a slightly longer board than 140

just chexk the board you are ordering has your weight within its weightrange

its not vital but if you want the most out of your new board make sure its specifications fit you

hope it helps

My feet are too big for my snowboard, do I have to buy a new one?

I wear size 15 boots. I have a long forum, 25 cm width. But when I ride powder I dig into the snow, and when I ride anything steep my toes dig in and I loose the grip on the carve. Any hints will be helpful.

if you had 11 or 12 size boots, you might be able to get away with riser plates to lift your bindings, but with size 15 kicks, you’re going to need a wide board. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. If you are intermediate, I recommend the ride fleetwood. If you are more advanced look at the Ride Yukon.

A skateboard-snowboard mixed? skateboard with bindings, can be proppeled by mimmicking snowboard carving?

yea i saw a video with quite a few people with skateboards that had a type of bindings on them. they can be propelled by mimicking the carving of a snowboard, yet they have a normal skateboard top and wheels on the bottom, (you cant push it along with your feet because you are strapped in)

please inform me were i could purchase one or where i could find more information

links to sites would be appreciated by not required

I think I know what you’re looking for, but these are better

Snowboard Carving?

Hi, I’ve been snowboarding for about two seasons now, and I can carve down black diamonds perfectly. Recently, however, I have tried to think about why carving is faster, but I just don’t get it. Yes, you have less surface area on the snow, but surface area does not affect the frictional force. I also highly doubt that it cuts down on your air resistance. So anyone know the reason? Thanks.

It is faster because you are not wasting your energy pushing snow around. Think of a beginners first turns: they finish the turn pushing snow down the hill in a sideslip – essentially putting on the brakes after each turn. As you get to be intermediate, the snow is pushed to the side so you are not slowing down as much, but it is still sliding around the turn and therefore slowing you down. In a true carved turn, you are on the edge throughout and there is no sliding whatsoever. So no sliding equates to no slowing down.
